Me Before You Fashion Pt 4: The Rest of Lou’s Looks

Was I the only one who noticed the significant use of butterfly and bird prints on Louisa’s (Emilia Clarke) clothes in Me Before You? Having done many interviews with costume designers in the past, I thought for sure that Jill Taylor, who was responsible for the heroine’s bright, spunky wardrobe, was going to confirm my suspicion: that the winged creatures were meant to symbolize Lou’s need to break free.

Well, guys, apparently sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. While I insisted that I knew she chose those prints on purpose, she explained it wasn’t really all that intentional. At least not in the deep, thought-provoking way I had hoped.

“At the time that we were buying, there were lots of things with butterflies on them, and we thought that could be one of her ‘things,'” Jill said. “Like shoes were one of there things, we just thought, she likes butterflies, too. It became a thing! It wasn’t a conscious thing. We didn’t think of it as a symbolic.”

Some of those non-symbolic clothes are ID’ed below, along with other key item’s in Lou’s closet.
