Somehow in the middle of posting about The Fault in Our Stars clothes back in June (deets on Gus’ leather jacket is here; Hazel’s blue dress is here), I overlooked one of the most important stories to come from my interview with costume designer Mary Claire Hannan: The explanation behind Hazel’s (Shailene Woodley) white dress in the final scene of the movie.
If this fashion choice has been bugging you (I have seen it as a topic of discussion on a few FIOS fan sites), then consider this one a mission accomplished for the wardrobe department.
“I wanted to leave people thinking, Why did they put her in a white dress?,” MCH said.”There were a lot of reasons for the color white. One, because she’s lying in the grass and a girl in the grass in a white dress is always pretty. But I wanted to make it almost ethereal. I wanted to make it girly because she had been so boyish or androgynous before she met Gus. I also thought, Will people think she’s dead and she’s an angel? I wanted to leave that door open because we didn’t know what happened to Hazel in the end, just like in the book in the movie, [An Imperial Affliction], we never knew what happened to the girl.”
Originally, however, the costumer said the scene called for the actress to wear boy’s t-shirt while she read Gus’ letter. “We knew it had no femininity, and I wanted to make it feminine because we knew she’d gotten that far with Gus,” she recalled. “But what happened to her after that? I wanted to leave it open.”
The last minute style shift forced MCH to make a mad dash to the mall during shooting. “That was me running around at the last minute because you get these ideas at three-in-the-morning, you know how that is?,” she laughed. “I ran around locally in Pittsburgh, I had just come from Nordstrom or something, looking for a really pretty white dress. I found some good dresses, but the way they were shooting it from the neck up, i needed to hone in on some lace or something. I ran onto set with half a dozen white dresses selling this idea!”
[Editor’s note: The Fault in Our Stars DVD was released yesterday!]
HAZEL’S WHITE LACE DRESS:
The costume designer thinks it came from Nordstrom’s BP label, but she cannot remember for sure!
