Despite the somber backdrop painted in nearly ever scene in World War Z, costume designer Mayes C. Rubeo wanted Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) and his brood stand out. “We aimed for non-gloomy colors for the Lane family,” Mayes told OSS.
That must’ve been a huge relief for Mireille Enos, whose entire persona on the AMC Series The Killing revolves around her character’s dark day job. For her transition to the big screen as Gerry’s wife, Karen, the actress got to slip into something a lot more comfortable. “She’s a modern mother on a very normal day for a mother on the weekend,” Mayes explained adding that Karen’s fashions were meant to match her nurturing personality . “She’s comfy, not trying to be sexy.”
In order to illustrate that casual vibe, the stylist dressed Mireille in a maroon cardigan, grey tank, and jeans. Then she adorned her neck with a delicate gold accessory, which immediately caught this bloggers vintage-loving eye. “I had the pendant replicated from an idea of a spinning medal necklaces that were big in the 60s and 70s,” Mayes said. “It has scripted fractions of the phrase ‘I Love You,’ and when you spin it, it shows the words clearly.”
