For anyone wondering where the poignant cover of Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” from the end of last night’s The Carrie Diaries (season 1, episode 12, “First Time For Everything“) came from, it was by singer Fay Wolf.
The reason I am mentioning this song is because it’s the first time on the run of the show where I actually noticed how perfectly connected the moment was to the tune playing in the background.
It was also the first time I truly felt AnnaSophia Robb embodied the heroine we all know Carrie Bradshaw to be — ambitious, anxious, and incredibly affected.
The way she kept apologizing to Sebastian (Austin Butler) every time she had to leave him at the Madonna party …the way she proudly smiled when she realized she was going to get her very first byline in a magazine … the way she desperately wanted him to be proud of her … and the way in which she suggested they breakup even though that’s the last thing in the world she wanted at the moment. All of it was so Carrie and exactly what TCD has been missing.
