Saying goodbye to the legendary J.R. Ewing (Larry Hagman) in this week’s Dallas (Season 2, Episode 8, “J.R.’s Masterpiece”) was very tough for the stars of the show, but we often don’t realize the behind-the-scenes talent can also be affected.
“Dressing the character’s for JR’s monumental funeral was incredible and challenging,” Dallas costume designer Rachel Sage Kunin told OSS. “I knew that I wanted to show off each of our character’s personalities, even in a sea of black.”
I specifically asked Rachel if she worried any of the characters’ clothes would come off as excessive during such a somber milestone, but she insisted that’s never a problem in Southfork.
“In Dallas, I’m never afraid of making anyone look to over-the-top. For [the funeral] scene in particular, I was more worried that it would look too flat with the monochromatic pallet. I used a lot of different textures to give it some interest to the eye.”
