There is a storm brewing in season 3 of Downton Abbey. The wind has swept in a hoity toity American (Shirley MacLaine) onto the grounds of the Crawley mansion, and with her comes suitcases full of sarcasm and avant-garde fashions.
Besides ruffling the Dowager Countess’ (Maggie Smith) feathers, the introduction to Grandmama Levinson and her flashy clothes serves another purpose — it marks the beginning of the Roaring ’20s. And for our aristocrats, a new decade means a whole new wardrobe. “The fashions for women [have] started to loosen a little,” explained Michelle Dockery, who plays bride-to-be Lady Mary, in a PBS.com video. “The waists have dropped, the ankles are showing a little, and there’s more of a freedom in the structure of the costumes.”
Now that the formal, binding corsets are out, the easy nature of flapper dresses and more liberal styles are in. ”It’s more glamorous than last season,” costume designer Caroline McCall told EW.
If only we could take a time machine back to 1920 and relish in the glamour ourselves. Alas, we’ll just have to settle for a trip to the mall to purchase these modern-day looks inspired by Downton’s resident fashionistas.
